Episode 11 – Oh So Orderly

#CouchPotatoLab

First, you will need to download the Oh So Orderly lab manual.

Math, the wonderful processes we use everyday whether it is consciously or not! To keep mathematical processes organized, a special order was created. This is known as the Order of Operations! This order ensures that answers of a specific equation will be consistent, as the same order is followed!

This order has a handy acronym to help us remember, and that acronym is BEDMAS. BEDMAS stands for Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction and is the order in which you should complete the processes of solving an equation. For example, if there are brackets in your equation, you would first work to solve what is inside those brackets before completing other processes.

This activity will help us to understand BEDMAS and how it can be a useful and necessary tool when solving mathematical equations!

Saskatchewan Curriculum Connections:
N6.3: Demonstrate understanding of the order of operations on whole numbers (excluding exponents) with and without technology.
N7.2: Expand and demonstrate understanding of the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of decimals to greater numbers of decimal places, and the order of operations.
N9.1: Demonstrate (concretely, pictorially, and symbolically) understanding of powers with integral bases (excluding base 0) and whole number exponents including: representing using powers, evaluating powers, powers with an exponent of zero, solving situational questions.
